“Calling all Earth Defenders, Justice Champions, and Activists for a Better Connecticut! 

Climate chaos is upon us and Connecticut is lagging behind on meaningful and equitable climate action. After a lackluster session in 2023, folks that care about the climate, the planet, and the wellbeing of all people in the state are coming together to plan on how to put pressure on our elected officials and regulatory agencies to Keep Connecticut’s Climate Promise. Focusing on issues like greenhouse gas reduction, clean energy, housing, job creation, and corporate responsibility, we will come together to march through Hartford on February 2nd and will keep up pressure on the legislature throughout the 2024 session. We are hoping for an enormous turnout to remind the powers that be of who they work for and of our inalienable rights to a safe, healthy, and sustainable world.

Join the Sierra Club Shoreline Group on Sunday, January 14 at 2:30 pm at the Acton Library, 60 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook for a presentation and conversation about how the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) can save you money on energy costs. IRA rebates will also hasten a transition away from fossil fuels to more efficient, zero-emission alternatives that will result in a reduction of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Our presenter is Steve Lewis, an avid proponent of green energy solutions and the Chair of the Greater Hartford Sierra Club. He will walk us through the benefits of efficient zero-emission technologies and his personal experiences with energy efficiency, solar panels, heat pumps, electric vehicles and more. You will learn about the rebates available through the Inflation Reduction Act. You will also learn about proposed legislation for the 2024 Connecticut General Assembly session that will increase adoption of solar energy, heat pumps and energy efficiency solutions in Connecticut. RSVP today!

On September 28, EPA announced the launch of the next round of rebates for the Clean School Bus Program. EPA will be awarding $500 million dollars to school buses through this round. Join the Sierra Club and the Alliance for Electric School Buses on November 6th to discuss how staff and volunteers can encourage school districts to apply for electric school buses. We'll discuss the benefits of electric school buses, campaign materials, and opportunities for further engagement.

NHTSA is announcing a virtual public hearing to be held September 28, 2023, on its proposal for the Corporate Average Fuel Economy Standards for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks for Model Years 2027–2032 and Fuel Efficiency Standards for Heavy-Duty Pickup Trucks and Vans for Model Years 2030–2035, which was signed on July 28, 2023. This hearing also allows the public to provide oral comments regarding the Draft Environmental Impact Statement that accompanies the proposal. An additional session will be held on September 29, if necessary, to accommodate the number of people that sign up to testify.

The final days of the 2023 Connecticut legislative session draw near, and many legislative priorities shared by the Connecticut Coalition for Climate Action will be voted on soon. Recent global and state reports underscore how short the window for meaningful climate action is. With the General Assembly choosing to kill legislation that would have enhanced our state climate law and established accountability for meeting our mandated climate emissions reductions, it is even more crucial that individuals come together to support remaining bills that strengthen environmental justice protections and increase transparency and funding in support of healthy and efficient homes. While far from the comprehensive action that is needed to adequately address the climate crisis, passage of these bills this session will help to protect the health residents and our  natural environment.

CT Coalition for Climate Action Mid-Session Update, hosted by Save the Sound

Connecticut is falling behind in meeting its climate pollution reduction obligations. Environmental advocates, health experts, labor and municipal representatives, and more have formed the CT Coalition for Climate Action and are advocating for strengthening the state’s climate law, the Global Warming Solutions Act (GWSA), to reflect the urgency of the climate crisis.

The Connecticut General Assembly has completed the public hearing stage of the 2023 legislative session, having heard dozens of proposals including SB 1145 An Act Concerning the Establishment of Sector Specific Subtargets for Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reductions and HB 6397 An Act Concerning Zero Carbon Emissions, bills that would help achieve our goals and put Connecticut on the path to meeting its commitments.

Watershed Stewardship Workshop

Caring for water orients a congregation in a new and deep way to its spiritual, social, cultural, and ecological community, while also positioning it to develop supportive ties to other congregations and groups in the area to foster watershed health. When a congregation cares for its local watershed, it potentially promotes awareness and action to ameliorate worldwide water issues, including those compounded by climate change and the feminization of poverty. The two-hour workshop will include a Powerpoint description of watersheds, water rituals, information about local collaboration, and a reflection on the meaning of "living water." Health professionals and climate advocates from the American Lung Association, Connecticut Coalition for Climate Action (CCCA), and the Connecticut Health Professionals for Climate Action (CHPCA) held a press conference commemorating World Asthma Day. They were joined by Connecticut Department of Public Health Commissioner Manisha Juthani and State Senator Saud Anwar, both of whom highlighted the need to mitigate greenhouse gasses and air pollution so that asthma and existing respiratory illnesses aren’t further exacerbated.
